A great and fun filled weekend greeted those that attended the 36th Annual Conference and Business Meeting that was held at the Marriott Inn in Coralville on April 4-5-6, 2008. Immediate Past President Robert Taylor was the conference chairperson.
The Board of Directors meeting was held on Friday morning, allowing all of the board members to help set up for the conference on Friday afternoon. Later in the day, as the other guests arrived, many were able to greet old friends that they had not seen since the last conference.
Friday evening, everyone was able to meet in the ISRLOA hospitality room to visit and enjoy the company of those that they may not have seen since the last conference. The Muscatine County Sheriff’s Reserve hosted the hospitality. Music and dancing on Friday evening was provided by the band, The Thunderbirds. Many also enjoyed some of the local restaurants in the Coralville area.
Saturday morning began with registration and the opening ceremony. President Quinn Turner opened the 36th Annual Conference and Business Meeting by calling for the presentation of the colors. Pastor Mark Clark, a Muscatine County reserve deputy, gave an opening prayer. After welcoming everyone President Turner then introduced Conference Chairperson Robert Taylor. He welcomed everyone to Coralville and then introduced Coralville Mayor ProTem Henry Herwig, Coralville Police Chief Barry Bedford and Johnson County Sheriff Lonny Pulkrabek, who welcomed all of the members to the Coralville area.
The morning activities finished with district meetings and the annual business meeting, which included reports of officers, business of the association and the election of a new 2nd Vice President.
Saturday afternoon’s first seminar was conducted by ILEA instructor John Metzger. The subject of his seminar was the Street Officer’s Perspective on the War on Terrorism and the Lessons Learned from the Beslan, Russia School Takeover. The second seminar was the Do’s and Don’ts of Working With a Police Dog. This was given by Muscatine County Sgt Quinn Reiss and his police dog, Magnus.
Saturday evening began with the annual banquet. Guest speaker was Colonel Patrick Hoye, Chief of the Iowa State Patrol. After the banquet everyone was entertained by comedian Mike Armstrong.
Sunday morning started with a brunch, at which time the new 2nd vice president, Ed Seggerman of the Henry County SO was introduced. The trophies from the 2007 shoot were presented to the winners by ISRLOA chief range officer Ted Kamatchus and shoot chairperson Rod Fitzgerald.
This year’s conference again proved to be a huge success and those that attended enjoyed a educational and fun-filled weekend. Once again, exhibitors were on hand to show the latest equipment in law enforcement. The 2009 Conference and Business Meeting will be held in West Des Moines.
