"VOLUNTEERING TO SERVE" IOWA RESERVE PEACE OFFICERS

Reserve Officer Appointment Standards

REQUIREMENTS FOR IOWA RESERVE PEACE OFFICERS

In 1980, the Iowa legislature passed into law certain requirements that law enforcement agencies must meet if they are to appoint reserve officers.  This is Chapter 80D, Code of Iowa.  This code has been changed several times, with the most recent in 2007.  This code also gives the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy Council the authority to set appointment standards, training standards and certification standards for Iowa reserve officers.

In 2004 the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy Council set appointment standards for Iowa reserve officers.  In 2007 the Iowa legislature changed Chapter 80D, Code of Iowa giving the ILEA the authority to set guidelines for training standards and certification of reserve officers.  This is all covered in the administrative rules, Chapter 501.10 of the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy.
